Bair Hugger Multidistrict Litigation

The Bair Hugger forced-air warming device was invented in the 1980s to keep patients warm while undergoing surgery in chilly operating rooms. The idea was that heated air would flow from a warming unit through a hose into a blanket, keeping the patient’s body warm. Most hospitals in the U.S. use forced-air warming and Bair Hugger is a leader in the market. It has made its manufacturers, Arizant and 3M, vast amounts of money.

There is a theory, however, that many patients developed very serious deep joint infections resulting from the Bair Hugger’s defective design. These infections sometimes develop in patients who underwent joint-related surgeries, especially those for the hip and knee replacements.

These infections are often exceptionally difficult to treat, require aggressive antibiotic regimens, result in multiple additional surgeries, and lead to other serious health conditions, including amputations and death.

The serious nature of these infections and the alleged dangerous defects in the Bair Hugger system has led to the establishment of Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) in federal court in Minnesota.
